The lockdowns are not only making people crave for food, it makes them try trends. Which is a good thing. It’s like trying a dish from a different country is travelling through food.
One of the trends that gained worldwide popularity is the Dalgona coffee. Its tag on TikTok currently has over 100 million views as many coffee-lovers tried to make the concoction at home and made their own how-to videos as well.
What is Dalgona Coffee
Simply put, dalgona coffee is whipped coffee. It is made by whipping 4 ingredients – instant coffee, sugar, hot water and milk.
You whisk coffee, sugar, hot water and milk until it reaches that creamy texture or until stiff peaks form. It’s then dolloped over warm milk.
It is somehow similar to the Viennese Einspänner.
While dalgona was first concocted in 1991 at Hon Kee café in Macau, it came to be known only in 2004 when Hong Kong actor Chow Yun-fat and his entourage who visited the café that year. It was South Korean actor Jung Il-woo who is credited for the name dalgona, a type of Korean honeycomb toffee that he said resembled the taste of the whipped coffee. He ordered the drink in January 2020 during his appearance on the TV show called Stars’ Top Recipe at Fun-Staurant (신상출시 편스토랑) and it garnered attention from the viewers.
Making Dalgona Coffee : Ingredients
Dalgona coffee is easy to make whether for yourself or for a group, here’s what you need for 1 serving:
– 1 Tbsp instant coffee
– 1 Tbsp sugar ( (I used Erythritol)
– 1 Tbsp hot water
– 1 cup milk – warm or cold
I haven’t tried this with almond milk or lactose-free milk, but try to use your preferred milk. Many of those who used ground coffee found that it didn’t get as frothy as would be compared to instant coffee. Erythritol is a sugar alternative that doesn’t get absorb into the bloodstream. You can also put ice to your cold milk.
How To Make Dalgona Coffee
- Mix instant coffee, sugar and hot water in a mixing bowl.
- Using a handheld mixer or milk frother, whisk it on high speed until it forms a stiff peak. This may take 2-4 minutes.
- Pour milk in a glass, make sure there’s enough space for the coffee mixture.
- Top your glass of milk with the frothy coffee mixture, enjoy!
Using a stand mixer will certainly make frothing easy-peasy. It’s also best to use when you are making a large batch.
Toppings
Dalgona coffee is best served as is, to cool you down on a warm summer day. As it’s likened to a Frappe albeit reversed, it’s a yummy snack drink. You can top it with crushed biscuits, chocolate bits, or toffee crumbles (dalgona toffee to compare).
You can also have dalgona coffee with lotus biscuits, they pair well.
Try Again
If your mixture didn’t reach stiff peaks, just try again. Mine was at first flat, but it did taste good so I tried once more, and again until it reached that frothy texture.
